Catch Up & Review: 2010 Part 3 Moose River

For our final camping trip of the year we spent one last weekend at Moose River at the end of August. The campsite we chose had been oddly decorated off to the side. Someone put a lot of effort into this rock arrangement, and they arranged some long grasses on the ground and in the trees. It was very strange, and I have no idea what it means, if anything.

After dark on the first night, we were sitting by the campfire, and all was quiet. Then all of a sudden this horrific noise began, and it was not far away. It was indescribable, this high-pitched screeching and yelping and screaming in a very frenzied manner. As it continued, it seemed to be getting closer. I nervously looked at Ken and asked, “What the hell is that?” He said it sounded like coyotes on a kill. It must have gone on for at least five minutes, and I’ve never heard anything like it in my life. We always have the guns handy when we’re in Moose River, but it was still one of those things that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up and all my muscles tense and ready for action! Needless to say, I was quite alert for quite a while that night! I kept shining my flashlight down the road and into the woods just to make sure no eyes were staring back at us.

We did a short hike down one of the rougher roads we didn’t feel comfortable taking the Jeep on. We also tried to do the hike to White’s Pond. We found water but we don’t think it was White’s Pond. The trail was not kept up and didn’t seem to have gotten much recent use. This made it difficult at times to be sure we were on the right path.

Trail markers were also not as numerous as we’re used to seeing. As it was getting late in the afternoon, we headed back so as not to be caught in the woods trying to navigate in the dark. Maybe we’ll go back to this one another time and try again. It was an enjoyable hike, regardless.

As always, we had another memorable and exciting camping trip.

Unfortunately it was our last one of the season, as we would be moving in early November and still had a lot of things to do before then. Still, this was a great ending to an awesome and eventful camping season. Check out the rest of the pics from this trip! Moose River Wild Forest 8/27/10 - 8/29/10
